The Power of Five
A Review
Being teachers and authors ourselves, we look at Vanessa Hart’s The Power of Five – Audiobooks A-Z from
a different viewpoint than most. We know that putting into words the things we understand
so well and doing it in such as way that others understand too is not always an
easy process. It takes much time and deliberation to make certain concepts are
explained simplistically without sounding condescending. Vanessa has done a
masterful job at this! The workbook is well laid out and offers an easy to read
“map” for the journey through the world of audio books.
The chapters are in a logical order, well written and illustrated. We
especially liked the examples of how she marks a script and assigns colors to
her characters when she is preparing to perform. The tools she uses (and now so
lovingly shares with others) are brilliant!
We also liked her chapter on The Narrator’s Voice. As voice acting
teachers, we often speak with students who feel that the narrator doesn’t need
to be a character. Vanessa’s explanation of the process of creating a
believable and powerful narrator is exceptional.
Her use of positive advice (such as The Optimist’s Creed) is again
further evidence of someone who truly cares about her students and their success.
And the references provided such as those in attendance at APAC, the list of
audio publishers, and the notes on AFTRA, are nifty little treasures you don’t
always expect to find in books – let alone a workbook!
All in all, The Power of Five
is a beautiful work. We will be recommending it to all our students who are
interested in a career narrating audio books.
